Thioether diols including 2–4 thioether units are developed and used to prepare crown oxathioethers by reaction with the expected group.
Crown oxathioethers including both oxygen and sulfur atoms have thus been synthesized and studied. They present great interest in organometallic chemistry because of their ability to coordinate efficiently a wide range of cations. The characteristic exodentate coordination by sulfur atoms has notably been applied to the preparation of organometallic polymers. Thermodynamic data allowed to highlight the impact of the increasing number of sulfur atoms on the coordination properties. Indeed, increasing number of sulfur atoms in a crown oxathioether improve its affinity for soft cation and reduce it for hard cations.
Such systems would be expected to show enhanced binding capabilities and selectivity in comparison with the hard donor systems. In the present study, a series of oxathiacrown ether ligands bonded to a [Ru(bpy)2]2+ complexing unit were synthesized, characterized and their recognition ability towards Hg2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ metal ions investigated by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods.
